Why were two Italians convicted in addition to Amanda Knox if the process in this case was unfair? The answer is quite simple if you look. For one, Guede is guilty as sin, and all the ACTUAL evidence points to him as the killer: fingerprints, DNA, etc. Two: You can't have an orgy (I'll explain this) with just two people!
Timing is everything. In this case lead investigator Edgardo Giobbi boasted to the press, and I quote, "We were able to establish guilt by closely observing the suspect's psychological and behavioral reactions during the interrogations. We don't need to rely on other kinds of investigation as this method has enabled us to get to the guilty parties in a very quick time."
Really? You are a superior investigator Mr Giobbi. Too bad every reliable law enforcement agency from Scotland Yard to the FBI discounts such 'evidence' as unreliable at best, and misleading at worst. Too bad for Knox and Sollecito that the investigators put such weight to their statements, because two weeks later, after the evidence had actually been processed, it all pointed to Rudy Guede.
Now, at this point, they could have owned up to their mistake and released Knox and Sollecito from custody. However, the press had already gone wild at this point printing stories about an undocumented 'confession' (Taped confessions are required by Italian law), 'Foxy Knoxy the she devil temptress who lured poor Meredith into her satanic web', taking statements out of context (3 days locked out of her house... goes shopping for underwear), and worse. So now, all Giuliano Mignini (a guy who sees satanic conspiracies everywhere) did was replace Lamumba with Guede.
Am I an outraged American? No, I'm an outraged person. Italians and British should be equally outraged that the tragedy of Meredith Kerecher has been doubly compounded by the conviction of two innocent people! Forget the tabloid gossip. Behavior in no way relates to criminality. Period, the end. Stick to the evidence, and there is not one reliable piece that connects Knox or Sollecito to this crime.
I point to the Duke Lacrosse scandal, and Prosecutor Mike Nifong as a direct example of a similar miscarriage of justice right here in the US. This is not an indictment of the Italian justice system. The system is only as good as the officials we allow to operate within it.
I find comments by some of my fellow countrymen to 'boycott Italy' silly. But I also find comments by English and Italian posters that call Knox a racist(and worse) because she implicated a black man (patrick Lumumba) equally silly and unfounded.
Lumumba was implicated by Knox because the investigators ASKED her to. Knox had sent him a text message saying "see you later" the night of the Kercher murder. Later, during interrogation, Knox was told they had proof she had met with Knox had sent him a text message saying 'see you later.' Later, during interrogation, Knox was told they had proof she had met with Lambada that night, and to explain Lumumba's role in Kercher murder. The INVESTIGATORS brought Lambada into this story NOT Knox. It was during the 'imagining' of the murder that Knox implicated Lumumba. Listen to Knox explain the circumstances in her own words here.
Anyone familiar with interrogation techniques knows that you could get your grandmother to confess to the Manson murders given enough time. Knox, trusting in authority figures and spending 3 grueling 14 hour days of interrogation finally broke down and told investigators what they wanted to hear. That Lumumba was not involved challenges the validity of the (undocumented) confession, not validating it!
